Meg.28b אין מַסְפִּידִין בהןוכ׳ no funeral services for an individual must be held in them (the synagogues); ומספידין … רבים but you may use them for funeral services in cases of public mourning (for a distinguished person). Treat. Smaḥ. III, 4 מספידין לענייםוכ׳ mourning services are held for children of poor men at the age of three, for those of rich men at the age of four years. M. Kat. 21b והִסְפִּידוּם הספד גדול and they arranged a great lamentation over them (the sons of R. ‘Aḳiba); a. fr. Nif. נִסְפַּד to be mourned for, be eulogised.
